In one of our last airline dashboard blog posts, I mentioned that a question that is usually raised within 30-60 minutes of an initial meeting with potential clients is “how long does it take to implement the aWall?”
Let’s talk about the idea of using Tableau as an airline operations (real-time) dashboard. To make it clear right from the beginning: I love Tableau. Actually, I think Tableau has changed the way companies are approaching the world of data analytics — tremendously and sustainably.
When discussing an aWall project with a potential airline, it usually takes only 30 to 60 minutes until the question is asked: “How long does it take? What’s the estimated project duration to set up our dashboard?”.
In many discussions, I had with airlines the question about KPI dashboard use cases was raised. And I have to admit, in the beginning, I didn’t get that question right. So what did I do? I tried to explain why a KPI dashboard is essential. And in case I still could see questions marks in the eyes of the airline representatives I tried to eliminate the questions with a battery of dashboard benefits.
On-time performance (punctuality) is probably the number one quality indicator for an airline (except safety aspects). And a quality indicator that affects your passengers massively. However, many airlines still struggle to improve their OTP or maintain it on a high level.
Good decisions are based on knowledge rather than numbers. Plato, one of the great Greek philosophers made this statement almost 2,500 years ago. Actually, this is a great and wise statement. And probably a quote that perfectly describes why I think that data – in its rawest form – is useless.
Every airline focus on operational performance. And every airline is already trying to monitor the most relevant performance indicators such as punctuality, regularity, or misconnex quota.
Sometimes you get carried away by all these fancy buzzwords and I am no stranger to that. However, I’m always aiming for feasible and executable solutions.
