In September, Delta Air Lines operated 126,627 flights. As a result, the U.S. carrier reduced its schedule by 5% compared to August. However, Delta continued to rank as the world's second-biggest airline by flight volume.

On-Time Performance

In September, Delta Air Lines achieved a solid on-time performance of 90%. Compared to other North American airlines —and bearing its huge flight volume in mind— the result reflects extraordinary punctuality. Compared to August, Delta Air Lines improved its punctuality by almost 5pp and is in line with its annual average.

Schedule Reliability

Delta's schedule reliability in September was 99.5%. Accordingly, the carrier had to cancel 0.5% of its flights. Compared to August, the results reflect a slight increase in cancellations. However, 99.5% is still considered as an excellent flight schedule

Flight Volume — 6 Months History

Delta Air Lines has reduced its flight volume for the second month in a row. The airline is now 7% below its peak in July, where Delta operated more than 135,000 flights. Moreover, the gap to American Airlines is almost 35,000 monthly flights.

Punctuality counts all flights that arrive on time at their destination airport and puts them into relation to the overall operated number of flights. On-time in this context is defined as +15/-15 compared to the scheduled arrival time. We consider an on-time performance above 90% as good (green), from 80%-90% as ok (orange), and below 80% as weak (red).
Flight Schedule Reliability (Reliability): Schedule reliability counts the number of actually performed flights concerning scheduled flights. In other words, the percentage of flights that an airline didn’t cancel. We consider schedule reliability above 95% as good (green), from 90%-95% as ok (orange), and below 90% as weak (red).
