Airline Review: Airline With Most Flights on 8th October 2021

American Airlines - Busiest Airlines on 5th October 2021 by flight volume
American Airlines remains the airline with the highest flight volume

As usual, American Airlines remained the world’s biggest airline by flight volume. And even more interesting: AA continued to operate more than 6,000 daily flights. If you aren’t aware: American Airlines added almost 1,000 flights to its daily schedule yesterday. That left us quite surprise and we’ve been wondering whether American Airlines will keep up that enormous amount of flights. For the moment, we can answer that question with yes. However, we will of course continue to monitor it in the upcoming days.

Besides, the ranking was very stable — with two exceptions. Ryanair operated more than 500 additional flights compared to yesterday’s ranking. As a result, Europe’s biggest airlines surpassed China Eastern and China Western and ranks 5th again.

Wizz Air on the other side added more than 100 flights and surpassed Air France and Hainan Airlines. Also, similar to the last review, there’s no airline from Latin America among the list of the world’s busiest airlines.

For the first time, Kuwait Airways is leading the list of the most punctual airlines

After many days, Kuwait Airways pushed Oman Air off the throne and can be proud of the title “most punctual airline.” Nevertheless, similar to Oman Air, Kuwait Airways currently operates a very meager amount daily flights.

Overall, many airlines seemed to have some OTP issues on that day. As a result, we have many airlines with an on-time performance below 90% in the top 15 — which is quite unusual.

It seems like many European network carriers had a hard time on the 8th of October. With Finnair, SAS, Austrian, and KLM we have four networks and legacy carriers on the last ranks. Moreover, KLM, SAS, and Finnair achieved poor results below 70%. But also many other airlines struggled.

Today, it is Alitalia again which had the poorest schedule reliability. The Italian carrier operated only 73% of its flights as scheduled. However, on a total base it is the Chinese airlines that canceled the most flights. China Southern, China Eastern, Air China, and Hainan Airlines canceled almost 1,000 flights.

Definitions

Flight Volume
In our case, we define flight volume as the number of flights the airline will perform in a certain period, September 2021.

Punctuality
Punctuality counts all flights that arrive on time at their destination airport and puts them into relation to the overall operated number of flights. On-time in this context is defined as +15/-15 compared to the scheduled arrival time. We consider an on-time performance above 90% as good (green), from 80%-90% as ok (orange), and below 80% as weak (red).

Flight Schedule Reliability (Reliability)
Schedule reliability counts the number of actually performed flights concerning scheduled flights. In other words, the percentage of flights that an airline didn’t cancel. We consider schedule reliability above 95% as good (green), from 90%-95% as ok (orange), and below 90% as weak (red).
