Airline Review: Airline With Most Flights on 5th October 2021

American Airlines - Busiest Airlines on 5th October 2021 by flight volume
American Airlines remains the airline with the highest flight volume

American Airlines remains the world’s only airline that operates more than 5,000 daily flights. October 5th, once again showed the dominance of airlines from the United States. With American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines, the four biggest airlines are located in the United States.

Compared to the recent days, Ryanair was surpassed by China Southern and ranks fifth today. However, China Eastern Airlines is also very close behind Ryanair. Besides Ryanair and Turkish Airlines, all European carriers operated less than 1,000 flights.

Also, similar to the last review, there’s no airline from Latin America among the list of the world’s busiest airlines.

Airline Review: Most Punctual Airlines on 5th October 2021

On 5th October, Oman Air —once again— conquers the title "most punctual airline"
On 5th October, Oman Air —once again— conquers the title “most punctual airline.”

Similar to the last report, Oman Air remains the most punctual airline with an on-time performance of 100%. However, again we have to take the minimal flight volume into account. Overall, Oman Air operated 36 flights on the 5th of October.

We find the punctuality all-stars on positions two to four: Vueling, Aer Lingus, and Iberia. However, contrary to the last rankings, we also have a bunch of Chinese airlines that made it into the top 10: China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, and Air China operated on a very high punctuality level on that day.

Alitalia was the least punctual airline on 5th of October
Alitalia was the least punctual airline on 5th of October

Looking at the bottom, we find Alitalia with the weakest on-time performance on the 5th of October. The Italian flag-carrier, which —most likely— will stop operations during the next days, achieved a punctuality level of 75% only. With Lufthansa and Swiss, we also have two airlines of the Lufthansa Group on the list.

Moreover, it is surprising to see Ryanair at the bottom of the list. Usually, the Irish low-cost carrier is famous for its very stable on-time performance.

Ryanair operated the most stable schedule on the 5th of October.

Again similar to the recent report, all airlines in the top 15 achieved a 100% flight schedule reliability. Accordingly, we ranked the airlines according to their flight volume in a second step. As a result, Ryanair ranks first since the airline operates the most flights while maintaining 100% schedule reliability. Moreover, it is interesting that mainly airlines from Europe and the Middle East made it to the list of the most reliable airlines.

GoAir (GoFirsT) canceled 20% of its schedule on 5th of October

When looking at the airlines with the poorest schedule reliability, we can find predominantly Asian and Middle East airlines. Actually, only two airlines from Europe and not a single airline from North America are on the list.

Looking at the absolute numbers, China Eastern Airlines canceled the most flights on the 5th of October. Overall the Chinese airline had to cancel 215 flights. Nevertheless, GoAir delivered an even worse performance and canceled almost 20% of its flights from a reliability point of view.

Definitions

Flight Volume
In our case, we define flight volume as the number of flights the airline will perform in a certain period, September 2021.

Punctuality
Punctuality counts all flights that arrive on time at their destination airport and puts them into relation to the overall operated number of flights. On-time in this context is defined as +15/-15 compared to the scheduled arrival time. We consider an on-time performance above 90% as good (green), from 80%-90% as ok (orange), and below 80% as weak (red).

Flight Schedule Reliability (Reliability)
Schedule reliability counts the number of actually performed flights concerning scheduled flights. In other words, the percentage of flights that an airline didn’t cancel. We consider schedule reliability above 95% as good (green), from 90%-95% as ok (orange), and below 90% as weak (red).
