Iberia: August Performance Report — Flights, Punctuality & Reliability

Today, we look at Spain's flag carrier, Iberia, and how the airline performed in August. Therefore, we present the most comprehensive and up-to-date operations performance report about Iberia. We looked at the carrier's flight volume, punctuality, and reliability in August. Here are the results!

The monthly airline performance report looks at airline operations regarding flight volume, punctuality, and schedule reliability. Every month, we analyze tons of airlines to provide a comprehensive overview of the different carrier’s performance. For this month, we already had a look at some major flag carriers (e.g., Air France, LOT) and low-cost airlines (Wizz Air, Ryanair, easyJet). Moreover, since we already analyzed Vueling, we also wanted to know how Spain’s flag carrier performed.

Therefore, we checked the latest performance figures and analyzed Iberia’s operational performance. As a result, we provide you with details about Iberia’s flight volume, conduct a comparison to pre-COVID, and take a closer look at punctuality and reliability in August. However, if you want to discover Iberia’s performance from February to July first — here’s the link you need.

The shown values are based on internal data sources. If you want to get access to airline performance figures in real-time, click here.

Iberia — August Performance Summary

  • Accordingly, Iberia is still 30% below its pre-COVID volume.
  • Moreover, Iberia recorded a strong on-time performance of 94%. However, the result is below Iberia’s annual average in 2021.
  • Flight schedule reliability remained strong and above 99.5%.

Iberia — Flight Volume

Compared to July, Iberia managed to add another 1,000 flights to its schedule. However, compared to previous months, Iberia’s growth lost a bit of steam. Iberia — Pre-COVID Comparison

When comparing Iberia’s flights with pre-COVID volume, the airline is still almost 30% down. However, when comparing August 2019 to 2021, Iberia operated 5,600 more flights in 2019.

Overall, it seems that low-cost airlines —so far— have recovered much better than legacy airlines. While other flag carriers such as British Airways or LOT struggle with 30%-40% of pre-COVID volume, airlines like Wizz Air, Ryanair, or Vueling are already back >80% level.

Iberia — Punctuality and Reliabiltiy

Punctuality
Iberia remained one of Europe’s most punctual airlines in August. However, the airline —once again— operated below its annual average of 95.8%. Nevertheless, Iberia improved from its low in July, where the airline achieved the weakest value of 91%. However, Iberia performs at a very high level compared to many other airlines in Europe and across the globe.

Punctuality counts the number of flights that arrive +15/-15 minutes to their scheduled arrival time and relates that to the overall number of performed flights.

Reliability
In August, Iberia had to cancel 40 out of 14,400 flights. As a result, Iberia maintained its very high flight schedule reliability. Moreover, the airline was able to improve its annual average.

Reliability counts the number of flights that actually have been operated and relates to the overall number of scheduled flights. Subsequently, the gap to 100% is flights that have been canceled.
