Aegean Airlines

Aegean Airlines is Greece’s biggest airline and operates out of its hub in Athens. Aegean is part of the StarAlliance and operates under the IATA Code A3.

Flight Volume, Cancellations, and On-Time Performance

From 1st to 25th August, Aegean Airlines has operated more than 3,400 flights. Overall, Aegean Airlines operated a stable flight schedule with an average of 135 flights. Greece’s flag carrier had to cancel only three flights resulting in an exceptional cancellation rate. Moreover, Aegean Airlines delivered an on-time performance of 84.4%. However, when looking at the chart, Aegean had started quite poor in terms of punctuality but has been able to enhance in course of the month.

Airline Performance Assessment

Compared to Aegean’s annual OTP performance, the airline is performing below average. Up to now, Aegean is more than 3pp down compared to the annual average. In terms of cancellations, Aegean is doing better than the (already very good) annual average and delivered a strong cancellation rate of only 0.2%

For August, we currently forecast a flight volume of 4,200. If this plays out, Aegean Airlines will record a flight growth of 7%-8%.

Flight Volume, Cancellations, and On-Time Performance

So far, in August, Vueling has operated almost 15,000 flights. At the same time, Vueling had to cancel only 20 flights. Moreover, most of the cancellations took place at the beginning of the month. Moreover, Vueling has constantly operated at an utmost high punctuality level. Except for one day, Vueling’s on-time performance has been above 90% — on many days even above 95%.

Airline Performance Assessment

In August, Vueling, so far, has operated above its annual on-time performance level of 91.5%. With currently 95%, the Spanish carrier plays in the first league in terms of punctuality — globally. In terms of cancellations, Vueling maintained its fantastic performance.

For the entire month, we currently forecast a flight volume of 18,200 flights. Compared to July, this would result in a strong growth rate of 20%. Moreover, the flight volume is five times the annual average.

Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic operates to destinations in North America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia from its main base at Heathrow, and its secondary base at Manchester.

Flight Volume, Cancellations, and On-Time Performance

From 1st to 25th August, Virgin Atlantic has operated slightly more than 1,000 flights. When looking at the chart, Virgin has delivered a pretty volatile flight schedule so far. Despite its low amount of flights, Virgin Atlantic reported one of the highest cancellation rates. On some days, the carrier had to cancel ten flights and even more. Contrary to its stability, Virgin Atlantic has delivered an exceptional on-time performance.

Airline Performance Assessment

With an on-time performance of 96.6%, Virgin Atlantic is on its way to massively improve its annual OTP performance (81.2%). However, and more important, Virgin Atlantic operates on a very poor cancellation level that is even worse than the annual average. Currently, the airline’s cancellation rate in August is 3.8pp above the annual average.

For the entire month, we forecast a flight volume of 1,300. If this plays out, Virgin Atlantic’s flight volume will grow by 100% compared to July.
