World’s Busiest Airports By Number of Flights
In fact, there are dozens of attributes to rate, rank, and benchmark airports: Number of passengers, destinations, or capacity are just a few examples. However, the number of flights is one of the attributes that perfectly reflects the current size of an airport. That’s why we specifically looked at this figure and put together the lists of the world’s busiest airports. Here’s what’s contained in detail:

Top 20 World’s Busiest Airports
When looking at the world’s busiest airports, China and the United States still dominate the ranking. Eight of twenty airports are based in the United States, whereas nine are based in China. Moreover, nine of the top 10 busiest airports are either in China or the United States.
No European Airport on the List
Similar to previous rankings, there’s still no European airport among the world’s busiest airports. However, as shown below, at least Istanbul and Amsterdam are getting closer to the world’s top 20.
No Middle East Airport on the List
Similar to Europe, the list of the busiest airports in June does not contain any airports from the Middle East. Moreover, the (former) big players from Doha or Dubai are currently miles away from entering the world’s top 20. Especially Dubai didn’t even make it to EMEA’s top 20 (See below).
Asia / Pacific Top 20 Busiest Airports
Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of Asia’s busiest airports are based in China. More precisely, 17 of the top 20 are located in China. Jakarta, Tokyo Haneda, and India’s Delhi Airport are the only “non-China” airports that made it into the top 20.

When looking at the busiest airports in Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), COVID’s impact is still apparent. For example, London Heathrow, one of the world’s busiest airports in pre-COVID time, ranks only 12th. Paris Moreover, Dubai or Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport didn’t even make it into EMEA’s top 20. On the other side, Russian and Saudi Arabian show strong performance.

North America Top 20 Busiest Airports
North America’s Top 20 looks like a “United States-only” ranking. There’s not a single Canadian airport that made it into the top 20. However, there are huge differences between the leading players that handled 10,000 flights and more and the bottom of the list.
[table “” not found /]Latin America Top 20 Busiest Airports
Latin America’s top 20 busiest airport list is the only one that contains airports with less than 2,000 flights. On top of that, Mexico is the only airport that handled more than 10,000 flights.
